Children's Play, Learning and Development

 

Equivalent in size to one A Level. 4 units across the two years, 2 coursework units, and two external exams.

This two-year BTEC course looks at the broad basis of study of the early year’s sector which suits learners who are interested in working with children.

All students will be required to carry out a minimum of 50 hours work placement in at least one setting over the two years.

This placement has to be a setting with children from birth to eight years. This course is equivalent to one A-level.

 

Unit 1 - Children's Development (External exam)

 

This unit gives you the background and key theories that will govern your working practice. You will learn about theories and models of development that explain how and why children develop. You will develop an understanding of a range of factors that influence a child’s development

 

Unit 2 - Development of Children's Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Skills (External exam)

 

In this unit, you will learn the sequence of children’s speech, communication, language, literacy and numeracy skills development. You will plan stage appropriate activities that encourage children’s development and understanding by stimulating their enthusiasm, and using exciting and interesting ways to enable them to find out more.

              

Unit 3 - Play and Learning (Coursework)

 

In this unit, you will learn about the types of play and the opportunities that should be made available to children at different ages and stages of development. You will consider why play is so important and how it supports children’s learning and development

 

Unit 5 - Keeping Children Safe (Coursework)

 

In this unit, you will study the responsibilities of a professional to promote and maintain health and safety, and what to do in an emergency or when there are concerns about a child’s welfare.

 

Additionally, learners will complete 50 hours’ work experience in the sector. It is mandatory that this is completed.
